22.11.13: New York Poetries

Exhibition & Live Performance

The New York Poets

New York PoetriesBericht von Frau Schuh

Last Friday night (22.11.2013), the English major students of year 12 showed, under the direction of their English teachers Ms Knörzer and Ms Schmitt, a good deal of poetic talent and creativity.  As part of a project on New York poetry, they’ve been having a close look at America’s largest city - at its history, its sights, but also its literature and art - in their English classes over the last few weeks. Inspired by these topics, they crafted their own poems and songs which each treated a respective aspect of the “City that Never Sleeps”. These brilliant pieces of art were thus performed during this very soiree. Through their poetry, the students not only sent the spectators on a journey to New York with its famous attractions such as Broadway and Central Park - they also managed to highlight important facets such as 9/11 and life in the ghettos with skilled sensibility. All performances showed the care and the love for detail as well as the hard work that was behind them and were truly entertaining. After the performances, the spectators had the chance to discover the student’s posters and charts on New York which were displayed in a gallery and to socialize over a drink with Leibniz Gymnasium’s  ”New York Poets”. It was a great night!

Bericht von Rebecca Mohr

The students of the English class 12 showed a presentation to the topic New York last Friday evening.  For weeks they have been researching information about the city, modeled posters and written poems and raps in groups concerning the most popular places and themes about and in New York. They recited poems and performed raps about, for example, the Times Square, the Central Park, the Ghetto or the multiculture in New York. There was also a poem about nine eleven which began with: "Never forget the day, innocent people died." In the end they recited all together a poem about the neighbourhood after nine elven. All in all it was a successful evening which showed how much the students have worked for this presentation.
